Understanding the Upcoming Increase in Lasting Power of Attorney Fees: What It Means for You
At Olive Tree Law, we believe in empowering our clients with the knowledge to make informed decisions about their future. One significant change on the horizon is the upcoming increase in the registration fee for Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA). Here’s what you need to know:
📈 What’s Changing?
Starting 17 November 2025, the fee to register an LPA will rise from £82 to £92 per application. This means that if you’re considering setting up both a Property and Financial Affairs LPA and a Health and Welfare LPA, the total cost will increase from £164 to £184. GOV.UK
🏛️ Why the Increase?
The Ministry of Justice has stated that this fee adjustment is necessary to ensure that income from LPA applications better reflects the cost of delivering services provided by the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG). This change aims to support the OPG in maintaining efficient and effective services. GOV.UK
💰 Potential Exemptions and Reductions
If you’re on a low income or receive certain means-tested benefits, you may be eligible for a fee exemption (no fee) or fee remission (reduced fee). It’s important to check your eligibility and apply for remission when submitting your LPA application. Power of Attorney
⏳ Why Act Now?
Delaying your LPA application could mean:
-
Paying more: The fee increase takes effect on 17 November 2025.
-
Missing out on protection: Without an LPA, your loved ones may face delays and additional costs if they need to make decisions on your behalf.
-
Facing potential complications: Setting up an LPA now ensures your affairs are in order, providing peace of mind for you and your family.
